Texas Supreme Court unanimously rejects abortion ban challenge

 June 2, 2024

The Texas Supreme Court has rejected a challenge to the state's strict abortion ban that was brought forward by 20 women who claimed that they had been denied medically necessary abortions.

Texas's abortion ban is near-total but has exceptions for medical emergencies, but the plaintiffs argued that the wording was too vague and left both women and doctors unsure of when they were legally allowed to have an abortion.

However, this argument was rejected entirely as the Supreme Court was unanimous in its decision.

Justice Jane Bland wrote the majority opinion and stated, "Texas law permits a life-saving abortion. The law permits a physician to intervene to address a woman’s life-threatening physical condition before death or serious physical impairment are imminent."

That wording seems quite clear, and it's worth wondering how a case this open and shut made it all the way to the Texas Supreme Court.

It's clear that this case was an attempt to poke a hole in Texas's abortion ban, and thanks to the state Supreme Court, that effort has failed. This is another big win for the pro-life movement.
