Supreme Court overturns ex-mayor's bribery conviction

 June 27, 2024

The U.S.  Supreme Court overturned the bribery conviction of a former Indiana mayor on June 26, and the impact of this decision might be felt in America for quite some time.

That's because it's not just former mayor James Snyder who is impacted by this decision. The verdict means that the scope of federal public corruption law has been narrowed in America.

Snyder, a Republican, was convicted of taking $13,000 from a trucking company after he allegedly steered about $1,000,000 worth of city contracts to the firm.

The Supreme Court issued a 6-3 decision, which included Justice Brett Kavanaugh siding with Snyder:

"Some gratuities can be problematic. Others are commonplace and might be innocuous," Kavanaugh said.

Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson gave her opinion for the minority:

"Snyder’s absurd and atextual reading of the statute is one that only today’s court could love," Brown Jackson wrote.

Do you think the Supreme Court made the right decision?
