Supreme Court Halts Court Orders On FDA Abortion Pill

April 15, 2023

Biden administration rules stating that the abortion pill can be shipped in the mail are back for at least five days, as a Supreme Court administrative stay has halted recent court orders on the issue until the justices are able to consider additional legal arguments on both sides.

During President Bill Clinton's tenure back in 2000, the Food and Drug Administration approved mifepristone, a drug that causes an abortion via contractions.

It has accounted for about half of all abortions that have happened in America since it was introduced.

In 2016, and again in 2019, the FDA removed several safeguards that limited the use of the abortion pill.

In 2021, Biden's government removed a major restriction that now allowed the bill to be shipped throughout the country in the mail.

The mail option was finalized this year. Then in April, Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas issued a 67-page decision that the FDA's actions were illegal under federal law.

The Supreme Court has now paused the effects of Kacsmaryk's ruling until the justices are able to reach a decision.
