Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez lied about knowledge of his wife Begona Gomez's corruption investigation, according to documents from the investigation that have recently been made public.

Sanchez wrote an open letter to the people of Spain in April after the Spanish press broke the story about an investigation into his wife, asking for five days to consider the allegations and whether he should resign.

He claimed repeatedly at the time that there was no investigation into his wife, but those claims turned out to be false. Gomez is accused of influence peddling to obtain funding for certain companies and people she supports.

Sanchez ultimately decided to stay in office after strong shows of support for him, but on May 27 the full investigation report was made public.

The report revealed that Sanchez knew about the investigation into his wife while he was claiming there was no investigation.

Political opposition has called Sanchez a liar, and tens of thousands of people have protested his continued prime ministership and called for new elections because of the lies.
