South Korean authorities fail to arrest impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol

 January 4, 2025

If you love a good old-fashioned standoff, this is your story.

South Korea's impeached President, Yoon Suk Yeol, currently has an arrest warrant out, but he is not being taken in without a fight.

Police showed up at Yoon Suk Yeol's home in an attempt to arrest him, but Yoon's personal security forces prevented them from entering.

Federal authorities were forced to abandon their plans to arrest Yoon on Jan. 3 after both civilian supporters and armed Presidential Security Service personnel outnumbered the forces who were attempting to enter the residence.

Yoon doesn't appear to be ready to give himself up anytime soon.

He recently promised to "fight to the end" and called anyone seeking to arrest him "anti-state forces."

Yoon was impeached in December after he attempted to declare martial law earlier in the month.

The martial law lasted only a few hours, but it felt a little too similar to the military rule of the past for many people in South Korea.

As a result, the country impeached him shortly after the martial law decision was revoked.

To say things have been tense between Yoon and authorities since then would be a massive understatement.

Do you think Yoon ends up going to prison?
