Senate Democrats Halt Bill to Fund Troops Amid Shutdown

 October 17, 2025

Washington’s political tug-of-war has taken a shameful turn as Senate Democrats shot down a vital defense spending bill, leaving our military personnel in financial limbo.

On Thursday, Democrats in the Senate blocked a critical measure that would have provided funding for the Department of War in the next fiscal year and secured paychecks for our troops during the current government shutdown, now grinding through its 16th day, as The Daily Caller reports.

The vote came in at 50-44, with just three Democrats—John Fetterman, Catherine Cortez Masto, and Jeanne Shaheen—breaking from their party to join Republicans in supporting the legislation.

Defense Bill Crumbles Despite Prior Support

This wasn’t some last-minute, poorly planned idea; the defense funding proposal had sailed through the Appropriations Committee with almost complete consensus back in July.

Yet, when it mattered most, the majority of Senate Democrats stood united in opposition, filibustering not only this essential bill but also a separate bipartisan attempt to end the shutdown—their tenth straight rejection of such efforts.

Without this bill’s passage, there’s no certainty that our brave service members will receive their pay if the shutdown lingers into November, even though President Donald Trump managed a temporary solution by reallocating unused Pentagon funds for payments due on Wednesday.

Military Pay Becomes Political Pawn

Senate Majority Leader John Thune was quick to highlight the glaring inconsistency in the Democrats’ stance on supporting those who defend our nation.

“After voting last week for an authorization bill to increase troop pay, Democrats just voted against the bill that would actually pay the troops,” Thune said.

Let that sink in for a moment. If you’re publicly cheering for higher military wages, how do you justify blocking the very funding that makes it happen, especially when our troops are already caught in the fallout of a budget standoff?

Republicans Call Out Democrat Inaction

Republican Senator Eric Schmitt didn’t shy away from criticizing what he sees as a deeper issue with the opposing party’s commitment to governance.

“Democrats voting down the defense spending bill shows they are not serious about working on appropriations bills,” Schmitt stated.

It’s a bitter reality to face—when the men and women who safeguard our freedoms are left wondering about their next paycheck, it’s difficult to see how such a stance resonates as anything but out of touch with the average American’s values.

Shutdown Drags On With No Resolution

Even Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal, who voted against the measure, conceded there’s a responsibility to support the military, though his actions painted a different picture.

Thune has been persistently urging Democrats to back a temporary funding fix to keep government operations running, but they’ve conditioned their agreement on unrelated healthcare policy demands, adding another layer of complexity to an already messy situation.

With the Senate not scheduled to reconvene until Monday and forecasts suggesting the shutdown will extend into next week—potentially becoming one of the longest in U.S. history—this deadlock shows no signs of easing, leaving military families to bear the brunt of partisan posturing while uncertainty looms large over their financial stability.
