Senate Democrats being pressured to stop DC law that would allow foreign diplomats to vote in local elections

Senate Republicans are pressuring Democrats to vote with them to overturn a Washington, D.C. law that would allow foreign diplomats to vote in local elections--even those from China and Russia--as well as illegal aliens.

The controversial law made Washington, D.C. one of a few localities seeking to expand voting rights to non-citizens, reasoning that they live in the locality and should have some say in how it is run.

The moves don't make practical sense, however, and could be used as an excuse to let tens of millions of illegal aliens vote, which is unacceptable.

“There’s nothing in this measure to prevent employees at embassies of governments that are openly hostile to the United States from casting ballots,” the Washington Post reported at the time of its passing.

Congress has oversight over laws passed in Washington, D.C., because it is not a state and because lawmakers need to live there when Congress is in session.

House Republicans and 42 Democrats have already voted to overrule the law, and now the Senate needs a few Democrats in order to pass it as well. President Joe Biden supports the law.
