Senate confirms Biden's record-setting judicial appointment
President Joe Biden has exceeded President-elect Donald Trump‘s first-term judicial appointment record as the Senate confirmed two final district judges on Friday to give Biden 235 judicial appointments.
The Senate approved the nomination of Benjamin Cheeks to be district judge for the Southern District of California and Serena Murillo to be district judge for the Central District of California.
Both judges were approved 49-47 along party lines ahead of the GOP takeover in January after Republicans flipped the Senate in November's election.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) celebrated the accomplishment in a statement saying, "We have confirmed more judges than under the Trump administration, more judges than any administration in this century, more judges than any administration going back decades."
Schumer was able to accomplish this thanks to a deal he cut with Senate Republicans that would fast-track the approval of nine federal district court judges.
This deal was made in return for leaving four higher-level circuit court picks for President-elect Trump to fill when he begins his 2nd term next month.
