Senate committee advances Trump's nomination of Scott Bessent for Treasury

 January 22, 2025

Donald Trump and his nominees are on a roll lately, picking up victory after victory.

Recently, the Senate voted 99-0 to confirm Marco Rubio as secretary of State, and now Trump has scored a VICTORY with a different nominee as well.

According to TheHill.com, "The Senate Finance Committee voted 16-11 on Tuesday morning to advance the nomination of Scott Bessent, President Trump’s pick for Treasury secretary."

Democrat Sens. Mark Warner of Virginia and Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire both split from their party to join Republicans in advancing Bessent, but that doesn't mean the nomination was without opposition.

Sen. Ron Wyden, a Democrat from Oregon, was adamant that he "strongly" opposed the nomination, accusing Bessent of being "not square on his taxes."

"He has opted out of paying his fair share of his Medicare taxes. The IRS has gone to court twice to ban this particular scheme that Mr. Bessent is using," Wyden said. "Treasury policy says what Mr. Bessent is doing is against the law."

Democrat Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island added, "Thirty years ago, nominees for Cabinet positions withdrew their nominations for failing to pay probably hundreds of dollars, at worst, thousands of dollars in taxes. We have an individual who has dodged $900,000 in contributions to Medicare, which, to me, is very telling."

Do you think Bessent should be confirmed?
