Senate border deal with Biden would give migrants work permits, lawyers and green cards

A leaked draft of the Senate GOP leadership border deal with the White House would give illegal immigrants work permits, lawyers and green cards, encouraging further illegal immigration and doing nothing to prevent it, according to the Immigration Accountability Project.

“There’s nothing in there that [restricts immigration], in fact, it’s just going to encourage more people to come,” the group's president Chris Chmielenski said.

“The Republicans went to the auto shop to get their car fixed and walked out with a broken cup holder,” he added.

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) confirmed the reports and called the proposed plan a "sellout" that would allow high rates of illegal immigration to continue unabated. He noted that the effort to get a deal in place would open up the door to further Ukraine aid, which he does not support.

Chmielenski and Paul pointed out that giving work visas to immigrants released into the country would drive U.S. wages down and create more competition for jobs.

The work permit provision could also override current law that says all migrants need to be detained until their asylum hearings. The law isn't being followed anyway, but it would be a bad idea to negate it with the new legislation.
