Sen. Feinstein hospitalized with shingles in San Francisco

California Democrat Sen. Diane Feinstein, who at 89 is the oldest current senator and longest-serving female senator, announced on Thursday that she is in the hospital being treated for shingles, which she contracted over the February recess.

"I was diagnosed over the February recess with a case of shingles. I have been hospitalized and am receiving treatment in San Francisco." Feinstein's office shared. "I hope to return to the Senate later this month."

She said she expects to make a "full recovery." Shingles usually occurs when older people come into contact with the virus that causes chicken pox.

Symptoms are a painful rash that can last up to a month. In some cases, longer-lasting nerve pain can result.

Feinstein's term is up in 2024, and she announced on February 14 that she would not run for re-election.

Her absence means that the Senate is at best, 49-49 since Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman (D) is also hospitalized for clinical depression.
