Republican Steve Scalise has officially confirmed the news.
He doesn't have the votes to become speaker of the House of Representatives, and he's backing out as a result.
"I just shared with my colleagues that I'm withdrawing my name as a candidate for speaker-designee," Scalise said while exiting a private meeting with other Republicans.
Scalise, a Republican from Louisiana, added that the GOP majority "still has to come together and is not there." He said:
There are still some people that have their own agendas. I was very clear, we have to have everybody put their agendas on the side and focus on what this country needs.
"We're going to get this done," Scalise concluded.
There's a real split happening in the Republican Party right now, and it's probably going to have to end before things progress in this country.
Some Republicans think that the right should be making no concessions to the evil left EVER, while other Republicans believe that siding with the enemy once in a while to appease them is part of the constant compromising.
