A Rwandan man who police say raped women and killed people with a machete during the country's 1994 genocide and lied about it in order to emigrate to the U.S. has been indicted by a Boston grand jury.

Eric Nshimiye, of Ohio, came to the U.S. in 1995 and became a citizen eight years later.

He is charged with falsifying information, obstruction of justice and perjury.

He is still in custody in Ohio pending the case's transfer.

The obstruction and perjury charges stem from a 2019 trial in which Nshimiye testified about his former fellow medical student's involvement in the massacre.

“For nearly 30 years, Mr. Nshimiye allegedly hid the truth about crimes he committed during the Rwandan genocide in order to seek refuge in the United States, and reap the benefits of U.S. citizenship,” Acting U.S. Attorney Joshua Levy of Massachusetts said in a statement.
