Russian forces attacked the Ukrainian city of Chernihiv on Saturday with missile strikes that wounded 117, 12 of whom were children. A six-year-old girl was reported killed.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack saying, "This is what a neighborhood with a terrorist state is, this is what we unite the whole world against. A Russian missile hit right in the center of the city, in our Chernihiv. A square, the polytechnic university, a theater. An ordinary Saturday, which Russia turned into a day of pain and loss."
Interestingly, Zelenskyy was out of the country at the time, as he was visiting Sweden.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson also condemned the attack as an “act of brutality” that “only reinforces the need for us to stand with you in all your struggles."
Sweden has traditionally remained uninvolved in major conflicts, but officials there broke that long-standing tradition in order to provide weapons and other aid to Ukraine after Russia invaded last year.
The war in Ukraine has continued to drag out and the people of Ukraine are paying a steep cost for the ongoing conflict. Unfortunately, there are no real forces pushing for peace, so the horrific killings will likely continue.
