Top DeSantis strategist, resigns, writing on the wall for presidential campaign

 December 18, 2023

Jeff Roe, the top adviser with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis's super PAC Never Back Down, announced his resignation just hours after a story from the Washington Post broke alleging that the group was being mismanaged.

DeSantis has been having a tough time in the race for the Republican nomination, and the chaos at his largest super PAC is yet another sign that his presidential aspirations are on life support.

Roe announced his resignation in a post to X, saying, "I can’t believe it ended this way." He then explained that he "cannot in good conscience stay affiliated with Never Back Down given the statements," in reference to the WaPo story.

Roe joins Never Back Down's two chief executives, the group's chairman, and its communications director on the list of those who have either been fired or let go from the super PAC.

Unlike many super PACs, Never Back Down was responsible for many basic campaign functions that are typically handled directly by a candidate's campaign.

This unusual model is suspected to be part of the reason that there is so much dysfunction and mismanagement, as the group is blurring the hard line separating campaigns from super PACs. Furthermore, the chaos and mismanagement aren't helping stop DeSantis's continued slide in the polls.
