Republicans on the North Carolina Supreme Court have blocked vote certification of an incumbent Democrat justice on the court while their opponent tries to get 60,000 votes thrown out.
Justice Allison Riggs leads Judge Jefferson Griffin by 734 votes by the current count, but Griffin hopes to take the lead after the votes are tossed.
Most of the votes Griffin wants discarded are missing a driver's license or partial social security number, which makes them illegal registrations.
But many of them were cast by voters who have voted for years and would be eligible if they had filled out the form correctly.
The stay is temporary until the matter of the votes is decided.
Riggs has recused herself from ruling on the matter.
