Republican Congressman Cory Mills denies wrongdoing amid assault investigation
Republican Congressman Cory Mills of Florida is denying any wrongdoing after Washington, D.C. police confirmed he is under investigation for an alleged assault.
The Metropolitan Police Department indicated that "officers were called to the 1300 block of Maryland Avenue, Southwest around 1:15 p.m. Wednesday for the report of an assault."
Mills has not been arrested, and no charges have been filed, but he is the focus of an ongoing criminal investigation.
Mills denied all wrongdoing in a statement released by his office:
"This week, law enforcement was asked to resolve a private matter at Congressman Mills’ residence. Congressman Mills vehemently denies any wrongdoing whatsoever and is confident any investigation will clear this matter quickly."
Police were called to the scene by a woman named Sarah Raviani who told the Daily Mail that she called police for help resolving a "personal matter."
"While the personal matter in question was emotionally charged, there was no physical altercation," Raviani said.
"This is a deeply personal matter that is being unfairly exploited for political purposes or other motives," Raviani concluded.
