Rep. Mace moves to censure Omar over controversial comments

 September 16, 2025

In a striking political maneuver, Rep. Nancy Mace, a Republican from South Carolina, has declared her intention to challenge a fellow congresswoman over recent statements that have sparked outrage.

Newsmax reported that this conflict centers on Mace's plan to file a resolution to censure Rep. Ilhan Omar, a Democrat from Minnesota, and remove her from committee assignments following Omar's remarks about the assassination of conservative figure Charlie Kirk.

The controversy began last week when Omar made comments in the wake of Kirk's assassination, addressing the rhetoric surrounding political violence.

Political Tensions Rise After Tragic Event

During an interview with journalist Mehdi Hasan, as reported by The Hill, Omar directed criticism at Republicans, including Mace, for their response to the incident.

She accused some political figures of targeting individuals they deem lesser, suggesting a hostile attitude toward certain groups.

Omar specifically stated, "you know, people that she finds inferior and wants them not to exist in this country or ever."

Harsh Words Fuel Congressional Dispute

Additionally, Omar pointed to former President Donald Trump, claiming he has encouraged aggression against individuals like herself.

She said, "And, you know, you have people like [President Donald] Trump, who has incited violence against people like me."

Omar went on to express frustration, adding, "And so, you know, these people are full of [expletive], and it's important for us to call them out while we feel anger and sadness."

Resolution Aims to Limit Omar's Role

On Monday, Mace responded to these statements by announcing her intent to take formal action against Omar.

She revealed plans to introduce a resolution that would not only censure Omar but also strip her of her roles on congressional committees.

Mace took to social media platform X to share her stance, emphasizing the severity of Omar's words in light of Kirk's assassination.

Social Media Amplifies Political Clash

Posting on X, Mace wrote, "We're filing a resolution to strip @Ilhan of her committee assignments after her disgraceful remarks on Charlie Kirk's assassination."

This public declaration underscores the deepening divide between the two representatives, highlighting a broader tension within Congress over rhetoric and accountability.

The resolution, if filed, could set a significant precedent for how lawmakers address controversial statements made by their peers in emotionally charged contexts like the aftermath of a high-profile assassination.
