Police Officer Killed By Inmate In Transport Vehicle

Marion County, Indiana Sheriff's Deputy John Durm has passed away at age 61.

His death is the result of an attack by an inmate in a transportation van near Indianapolis.

Orlando Mitchell, 34, assaulted the deputy while the vehicle was in a fortified entrance, according to authorities.

Mitchell then took control of the security van and crashed it into a utility pole while trying to escape.

He was unsuccessful and was captured shortly after the attack by other deputies.

Durm was the victim of an "intentional act of homicide," officer Shane Foley said.

Mitchell had been in jail since September of 2022 while awaiting trial for the murder of his ex-girlfriend, Krystal Walton.

It's probably safe to say that the manner in which he just demonstrated how capable he is at destroying human life probably isn't going to help his chances in the courtroom.

Durm was a 38-year veteran of the department and is survived by his wife and four children.
