A man fell more than 4,000 feet from the Skywalk over the Grand Canyon to his death on June 5, prompting a police investigation to figure out what happened.

"About 9 am Monday (6/5) morning, the technical rope rescue team from the Mohave County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue responded to Grand Canyon West Skywalk for a 33-year-old male who went over the edge at the Skywalk into the canyon," said the sheriff's office.

A rescue effort was launched, but the 33-year-old man's body was found dead at the scene.

"Two short-haul technicians (rope specialists) responded with Kingman DPS Ranger helicopter to the scene and determined the man was deceased," the sheriff's office said. "He was extracted to the Command Post and transferred to the Hualapai Nation."

Police are still not sure whether the man's death was an accident or whether he committed suicide, so they are investigating the situation.

The park is the deadliest one in America, with six deaths and 56 missing since 2018.
