Report: Pete Buttigieg considering run for Michigan Senate seat

 January 29, 2025

Sen. Gary Peters, a Democrat from Michigan, recently announced that he would not mount another re-election campaign.

The 66-year-old's decision to step aside after two terms poses a challenge for Democrats in Michigan during a period of political upheaval.

"After three terms in the House and two terms in the Senate, I believe now is time for me to write a few more paragraphs in my current chapter and then turn over the reins," Peters said in a video confirming his departure.

"I will, therefore, not seek reelection in 2026," he concluded.

One of the names who has come out as a potential replacement for Peters is former Transportation secretary Pete Buttigieg, who owns a home in the Traverse City area.

An anonymous source said that Buttigieg is "taking a serious look" at putting his name forward in 2026. "He’s honored to be mentioned for this and he’s taking a serious look."

Before Buttigieg served in Joe Biden's administration, he was the 32nd mayor of South Bend, Indiana, earning him the nickname "Mayor Pete."
