Ohio GOP endorses Donald Trump's 2024 presidential bid

 December 3, 2023

As Donald Trump's campaign to return to the White House presses on in seemingly unstoppable fashion, the Ohio Republican party just delivered its endorsement to the former president, as The Hill reports.

The endorsement represents the first such statement of support from a state GOP organization to be awarded in the 2024 cycle and is a significant boon to Trump's electoral bid.

In a press release issued by the Trump campaign, Ohio Republican Party Chairman Alex M. Triantafilou provided the group's rationale for the decision.

“President Trump has proven time and time again that despite the unhinged and relentless attacks from the radical left, he will never give up on fighting for Ohio's workers, businesses and families,” Triantafilou said.

The state GOP head went on to say of Trump, while also mentioning the state's senior senator, “His unapologetic leadership and commitment to putting America First is exactly what we need to reverse course from the failed policies of Joe Biden and Sherrod Brown.”

“Whether it is brokering peace deals, renegotiating bad trade policies, or making America energy independent, President Trump knows how to get things done. The sooner Republicans can coalesce around the clear choice at the top of the ticket, the sooner we can focus on the challenge of taking back the White House, flipping the U.S. Senate, and getting our country back on track,” the statement continued.

Triantafilou acknowledged the efforts of “all of the Republican candidates who are passionately making their case to the American people,” but declared, “it is clear that President Trump is the right choice in this moment.”

The Ohio GOP's formal announcement comes on the heels of a number of other key Republican endorsements of Trump that emerged over the summer, as NBC News reported back in August.

State Treasurer Robert Sprague as well as U.S. Reps. Troy Balderson and Bill Johnson jumped into the fray early, publicly declaring their support of Trump's 2024 bid.

Those endorsements added to Trump's Ohio tally, which already included the support of Sen. JD Vance as well as U.S. Reps. Mike Carey, Max Miller, and Jim Jordan as well as a trio of Republican Senate candidates from the state.

In explaining his support for Trump Sprague said at the time of his endorsement, “Under President Trump's leadership, our nation's economy was strong, we were achieving energy independence, our allies respected us and our enemies feared us,” drawing what appeared to be a contrast between prevailing conditions under President Joe Biden.

Johnson was more succinct in his declaration of support, saying, “It's time to return to the America First, common-sense policies of the first term of President Donald Trump, and that's why I am pleased to endorse him in 2024.”

The Trump camp will surely be delighted to receive such hearty support in the state of Ohio, which is typically viewed as a critical battleground in presidential years.

Though Trump took the state in both 2016 and 2020, this vote of confidence only adds to the momentum he currently seems to enjoy, with the former president leading the GOP primary stakes by an average of 48.8%, as RealClearPolitics notes.
