North Carolina Supreme Court election challenge to be considered in Wake County
The Wake County, North Carolina Board of Elections will consider on Monday a challenge to a close and contested state Supreme Court race that could change the outcome of the election.
After all absentee and provisional ballots were counted, Democrat Allison Biggs leads Republican Jefferson Griffin by about 700 votes.
Griffin has challenged 60,000 provisional ballots cast in the race, asking for them to be thrown out because of irregularities such as votes cast by deceased people and felons and a lack of information on record about some voters.
"Griffin has cited several reasons why he believes these ballots were mishandled, including claims that ballots cast by deceased individuals were counted," said Will Doran of WRAL’s NC Capitol team. Some of the voters may have been impacted by Hurricane Helene.
The allegations were raised before the election, when Republicans tried to have 250,000 voters purged from the voter rolls. Their request was denied, but Wake County seems more disposed to hear the challenge now.
The board of elections is controlled 3-2 by Democrats. A recount of the election is underway but was derailed last week by technical issues.
