Nikki Haley fires back after GOP rival Vivek Ramaswamy made fun of her Indian birth name

August 31, 2023

A sort of feud developed during the first Republican primary debate between GOP candidates Nikki Haley and Vivek Ramaswamy, both of whom are of Indian descent, with regard to their dramatically different outlooks on foreign policy.

That feud has continued after the debate, and Haley has now responded to a personal attack from Ramaswamy on his own website that highlighted her full Indian birth name of Nimarata Nikki Randhawa.

Such attacks, which typically come from the left, are nothing new for the former United Nations ambassador and South Carolina governor, and it has been previously explained on multiple occasions that she has been known by her middle name of "Nikki" since childhood and assumed her husband's surname of "Haley" after they got married.

"I’m not going to get into the childish name-calling or whatever, making fun of my name that he’s doing," Haley said of Ramaswamy in an interview. "I mean, he of all people should know better than that. But I’ve given up on him knowing better than anything at this point."

"I think we saw the childish, demeaning side of him onstage," she added. "I think he’s carrying that out whether it’s on the website or otherwise, but I have no use for it."

For what it is worth, the Ramaswamy campaign has sought to downplay the controversy by making fun of his own Indian name, but that likely won't dissuade the mounting criticism he faces over what some political observers believe was a cheap shot at one of his competitors for the GOP presidential nomination.
