New York City art dealer Brent Sikkema, 75, was found Monday dead with stab wounds in a condo he owned in Brazil, according to police there.

Police in Rio de Janeiro said they are investigating what happened to Sikkema, who owned the prestigious Sikkema Jenkins & Co. gallery, which dealt in contemporary art.

"Officers will listen to witnesses, are looking for more information and are carrying out other inquiries to shed light on the case," the Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro State announced. Police also said that forensics are being done at the property where Sikkema was found.

The U.S. Consulate in Brazil confirmed that a U.S. citizen had died there.

Sikkema's lawyer apparently found his body after not being able to get in contact with him.

"It is with great sadness that the gallery announces the passing of our beloved founder, Brent Sikkema," Sikkema Jenkins & Co. wrote in a post on Instagram. "The gallery grieves this tremendous loss and will continue on in his spirit."
