Music Icon Frankie Beverly dies at 77

R&B icon Frankie Beverly, who led the group Maze and had a decades-long career as a singer, songwriter and producer, died Tuesday at age 77, his family said in a statement.

Beverly was known for chart-topping hits like “Joy and Pain,” “Love is the Key,” and “Southern Girl." His song "Before I Let Go" became an anthem for family reunions and get-togethers in the Black community.

He toured with Maze until July, when he announced his retirement.

"Grieving the loss of a loved one is a deeply personal and emotional experience," his family posted on Facebook.

"During this time, as we are navigating feelings of sorrow, reflection, and remembrance we kindly ask for privacy and understanding, allowing us the space to grieve in our own way," the statement continued. "This period for is one of healing, and your respect for our need for solitude is appreciated as we honor the memory of our beloved Howard Stanley Beverly, known to the world as Frankie Beverly."

No cause of death was given.
