Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) had to be taken to the hospital on Wednesday night after he tripped and fell while attending a private dinner for top donors to the Senate Leadership Fund, a super PAC McConnell created, and which spent $290 million during the midterm elections.

McConnell, 81, was diagnosed with a concussion and is expected to be in the hospital through at least part of the weekend.

Spokesman David Popp conveyed that McConnell “is grateful to the medical professionals for their care and to his colleagues for their warm wishes.”

Longtime political adviser John Holmes told NBC News on Friday that McConnell is walking around, talking to staff, and "eager" to leave the hospital.

McConnell has been in the Senate since 1984 and is the longest-serving leader there, having been majority leader from 2015 to 2021 and minority leader since then.

He was last hospitalized for shoulder surgery to repair a fracture in 2019 after a fall at home.
