Michelle Obama rakes in the cash, post-White House

November 7, 2023

As many politicians who hold high office do, the Obamas got stinking rich in the public service sector.

But it's afterward that presidents -- and apparently their wives -- can stuff their bank accounts and live at a level unthinkable to most. Michelle Obama is evidence.

According to Nicki Swift, the former first lady, who didn't have a salary while her husband served as president, is reportedly raking in the cash post-White House.

Michelle Obama held several high-paying jobs before her husband won the White House in 2008, and was used to pulling in six figures, working in the law sector.

The outlet noted:

According to WhiteHouse.gov, Michelle once worked as a lawyer and an associate dean for the University of Chicago. Michelle was also the president of community and external affairs for the University of Chicago Medical Center in 2005, which means that it likely contributed to the six-figure salary on her tax returns.

While that certainly allows for a comfortable lifestyle unseen by many, Michelle Obama began minting money after their time in the White House.

Swift noted:

In 2017, Penguin Random House shelled out $65,000,000 in a joint publishing deal for herself and her husband, Barack Obama — whom they'd worked with before — according to the Financial Times.

That's just one of many deals made in the book sector alone, which allows the Obamas to live a life of luxury in their various residences, including in Martha's Vineyard.

Michelle Obama has published several books, with many of them selling millions of copies, bringing in mountains of cash.

In addition to making an absolute killing in authoring books, the former first lady also commands a staggering fee for public speaking gigs. It was reported that for one speaking gig alone, she was paid $750,000.

Adding to the Obama's extreme wealth was a $50 million Netflix deal that she and Barack Obama struck in 2018.

"Barack and I have always believed in the power of storytelling to inspire us, to make us think differently about the world around us, and to help us open our minds and hearts to others," Michelle said at the time.

But not everything she touches turns to gold, as the content produced for the Netflix deal ultimately tanked.

While it's only rumor and buzz, at best, there are a growing number of people who think there's at least a remote chance that Michelle Obama jumps into the 2024 presidential race as a replacement for President Joe Biden, who's tanking in the polls by the day. Only time will tell.
