Melania Trump leaves pro-life side of abortion argument
Many Republicans were surprised lately when Melania Trump announced that she was leaving the typical Republican position on abortion and speaking out in favor of pro-choice views.
According to Fox News, Melania Trump joins "several former Republican first ladies who have shared similar perspectives, often in their memoirs, despite this stance historically contrasting with the GOP platform."
Other first ladies, such as the wives of Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, George Bush I, and George W. Bush have all publicly expressed pro-choice views.
"I feel very strongly that it was the best thing in the world when the Supreme Court voted to legalize abortion and, in my words, bring it out of the backwoods and put it in the hospital where it belongs," Betty Ford said in 1975.
Nancy Reagan said, "I'm against abortion, I don't believe in abortion. On the other hand, I believe in a woman's choice. So, it puts me somewhere in the middle, but I don't know what you'd call that."
Barbara Bush wrote in 1994, "I hate abortions, but I just could not make that choice for someone else."
Laura Bush made her statement on Larry King Live in 2010.
"I think it's important that it remain legal, because I think it's important for people for medical reasons and other reason," she explained.
