Meese Says Jack Smith's Appointment 'Unconstitutional'

Former Attorney General Edwin Meese is a lot smarter than I am when it comes to the law and American politics, so I like to listen when people like him hold forth.

However, despite Meese's extensive education and on-the-job training that I lack, we've both reached the same conclusion about what Special Counsel Jack Smith is doing to Donald Trump.

It's complete baloney.

Meese recently filed an amicus brief with the U.S. Supreme Court saying it should pay no heed to anything Smith files for review.

In addition, all pending charges against Donald Trump need to be dropped as well, according to Smith.

"That appointment was unlawful, as are all the legal actions that have flowed from it, including citizen Smith's current attempt to obtain a ruling from this Court," Meese said in the brief.

"Neither Smith nor the position of Special Counsel under which he purportedly acts meets those criteria," the brief continues. "And that is a serious problem for the American rule of law — whatever one may think of the defendant or the conduct at issue in the underlying prosecution."
