McConnell to German audience: Republicans support aid to Ukraine, 'don't look at Twitter'

Sen. Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) told the Munich Security Conference in Germany that Republicans did support aid to Ukraine, and cautioned them "don't look at Twitter."

"Reports about the death of Republican support for strong American leadership in the world have been greatly exaggerated," he said. "My party’s leaders overwhelmingly support a strong, involved America and a robust trans-Atlantic alliance. Don’t look at Twitter, look at people in power."

While some of the rank and file have questioned the amount of aid being sent to Ukraine and want accountability to make sure it is being spent on the war, McConnell said party leaders--himself, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (D-CA) and leaders of Senate and House committees are all on board with the aid.

"Republican leaders are committed to a strong trans-Atlantic alliance," McConnell continued. "We are committed to helping Ukraine. Not because of vague moral arguments or abstractions like the so-called ‘rules-based international order.’ But rather, because America’s own core national interests are at stake. Because our security is interlinked, and our economies are intertwined."

The U.S. has given $110 billion in aid to Ukraine--including military, financial, and humanitarian aid--and is the top contributor to Ukraine's defense.

But our contributions have Russia looking at us like we are in a proxy war with the world power, and is it worth $110 billion and likely more to put our finger on the scale?
