McConnell's thoughts about Trump in 2020 revealed in new book
A new book has revealed private thoughts and comments that Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) had about former President Donald Trump in 2020, but McConnell says he and other Republicans critical of Trump are "all on the same team now."
McConnell isn't denying the accounts from The Price of Power, which say that he described Trump as "not very smart, irascible, [and] nasty."
He also said sarcastically, "I can’t think of anybody I’d rather be criticized by than this sleazeball," when Trump was attacking his wife, former Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao.
McConnell further called Trump "stupid," "erratic," a "despicable human being," and a "narcissist."
He endorsed Trump in March, saying he "earned the requisite support of Republican voters to be our nominee."
McConnell pointed out that other Republicans have also criticized Trump and later endorsed him, including his current vice-presidential running mate. "Whatever I may have said about President Trump pales in comparison to what JD Vance, Lindsey Graham, and others have said about him, but we are all on the same team now," he said.
