McCarthy confirmed plans to strip Swalwell, Schiff and Omar's committee assignments

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (D-CA) confirmed to the Associated Press on Monday that he plans to strip Reps. Eric Swalwell (D-CA), Adam Schiff (D-CA), and Ilhan Omar (D-MN) of their committee seats in Congress because of their misconduct.

“Swalwell can’t get a security clearance in the private sector. I’m not going to give him a government security clearance. Schiff has lied to the American public,” he said.

Omar will likely be removed because of her anti-Semitic comments over the years, as well as describing the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks as "Some people did something."

“Ilhan Omar should not be serving on Foreign Affairs,” McCarthy said.

The precedent for McCarthy's actions happened in the 117th Congress when then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) stripped Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (GA) and Paul Gosar (AZ) of their committee assignments.

Removing a House member from committee assignments requires a successful floor vote.
