Marathon World Record Holder Dies At Age 24

 February 13, 2024

Marathon world record holder Kelvin Kiptum has died after he was involved in a fatal car crash.

The president of Kenya, William Ruto, has shared his heartbreak after learning of the athlete’s death.

“He was only 24. Kiptum was our future,” said Ruto.

The crash occurred in western Kenya, close to a town called Kapsabet.

No other cars were involved in the accident.

Kiptum was behind the wheel with his coach in the passenger seat and a young woman in the back when the vehicle swerved from the road, went into a ditch, and struck a tree.

Both Kiptum and his coach, Gervais Hakizimana, died in the accident.

Kiptum just set the record for completing a marathon in under two hours and one minute back in 2023.

He was so young and had his entire future ahead of him.

Perhaps the most devastating part of Kiptum’s death is that the world will never know what he could have accomplished.

We pray for everyone grieving the tragic loss of Kiptum and Hakizimana.
