Manchin, Carper remain undecided about whether to run for re-election in 2024

In 2024, 34 Senators are up for re-election--23 of them are Democrats and left-leaning independents, and only 11 are Republicans.

So far, Maryland's Ben Cardin, Michigan's Debbie Stabenow, and California's Diane Feinstein, all Democrats, have announced that they are retiring.

The rest of the Democrats have announced they will run for re-election except Sens. Joe Manchin (WV) and Tom Carper (DE), leading to speculation about whether they will retire as well.

Manchin will face a tough race in a very Republican state -- former governor Jim Justice is leading the field at the moment.

Although Manchin has been a maverick and often voted with Republicans to thwart some of his party's more progressive ideas, he's still an outlier in a state that mostly elects Republicans.

Carper's seat is a lot safer, but that doesn't mean he won't leave it after more than 20 years in the Senate.
