Man blows himself up in failed attack on Brazil Supreme Court ahead of G20

A suicide bomber blew himself up outside Brazil's Supreme Court on Wednesday in a failed attack just days before the G20 summit was scheduled to meet nearby.

The would-be bomber was a 59-year-old former Rio de Janeiro city council candidate who threw two bombs toward the building and a statue, then pushed a button and blew up a device that he had put under his head after lying down, killing himself instantly.

There were other explosive devices recovered from his person and nearby. Just before he detonated the explosive that killed him, his car, which was parked in a parking lot next to the Chamber of Deputies, also exploded.

Police have labeled the explosions acts of terrorism. They believe the bomber was acting alone and that the target was Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who is investigating an attempted coup in January by followers of Jair Bolsonaro.

The b0mb squad safely detonated the remaining explosives found in the area on Thursday morning.

The area is now believed to be safe as attendees of the G20 summit prepare to convene.
