LAPD could file charges against drug suppliers in Matthew Perry's 2023 death

 June 27, 2024

In October 2023, Matthew Perry, known for his iconic role in the hit television series Friends, died at age 54, sending shockwaves through Hollywood.

It was later revealed that his death was the result of the "acute effects" of the drug Ketamine, which can be both prescribed and abused.

According to PEOPLE, the investigation into Perry's death is "nearing its conclusion," and local law enforcement sources closest to the case believe that multiple people should and will be charged in relation to the actor's death.

The outlet noted:

His manner of death was ruled to be accidental. An autopsy report obtained by PEOPLE in December showed he died from acute effects of ketamine, with other contributing factors including drowning, coronary artery disease and buprenorphine effects, referencing a medication used to treat opioid use disorder, according to the report.

In December 2023, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner ended its investigation into Perry's death, but it was later picked up on the criminal side by the Los Angeles Police Department.

LAPD told the outlet that earlier this year, it began working with the Drug Enforcement Administration and the U.S. postal inspectors on the investigation into Perry's overdose and where the drugs came from.

According to Deadline, LAPD investigators have dialed in on who might have supplied Perry with the drugs in the days leading up to his death.

The outlet reported:

The claims center on “a number of individuals” who seemingly supplied 54-year-old Perry with ketamine and possibly “other drugs” in the days before the actor’s death on October 28, 2023, law enforcement sources say. Perry received “drugs from associates he met online,” a person with knowledge of the investigation states.

While details of the investigation are largely unknown, many believe that some of the drugs were presumably supplied through the mail, hence the postal inspector's inclusion on the case.

LAPD investigators and prosecutors are remaining tight-lipped on the state of the investigation and potential charges.

"There is no additional information at this time," an LAPD officer said.

Deadline reported that if no federal charges are brought against potential suspects, it could still happen at the state level.

It also remains unclear what the specific charges would be, if any are filed. Only time will tell.
