Key Republicans on the fence about key Trump nominee
Donald Trump has been successful at getting many of his nominees confirmed so far, but that doesn't mean it's been an easy task.
Republicans hold the lead in Congress, but it's a slim lead.
There is not a lot of wiggle room for Republicans to decide to take a stand against any nominee, because Democrats are almost sure to cast 47 no votes.
That's why it could be a huge deal that Sen. Tom Cotton, a Republican from Arkansas, is reportedly hesitant about the nomination of Elbridge Colby to serve as the undersecretary of defense for policy, which is a key Defense Department post that is currently unmanned as Colby makes his way through the confirmation process.
"Senator Cotton is focused on ensuring all defense nominees commit to supporting President Trump’s position that Iran must not have a nuclear weapon, and Cotton will be addressing this in meetings and hearings with the nominees," a source close to the matter said.
According to Fox News, Cotton is concerned that "Colby has previously suggested that the U.S. living with a nuclear Iran is more plausible than countering the country's nuclear assets."
Some conservatives, such as Charlie Kirk, were upset that Cotton could be attempting to sink Colby's nomination.
"The effort to undermine President Trump continues in the US Senate @SenTomCotton is working behind the scenes to stop Trump’s pick, Elbridge Colby, from getting confirmed at DOD," Kirk said on X, the website formerly known as Twitter. "Colby is one of the most important pieces to stop the Bush/Cheney cabal at DOD. Why is Tom Cotton doing this?"
