Kevin McCarthy gives green light to expunging Donald Trump's impeachments

 June 26, 2023

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) has given his support to an effort by Representatives Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) and Elise Stefanik (R-NY) to expunge former President Donald Trump's impeachments.

McCarthy's assent to expunging Trump's impeachments came as a bit of a surprise, considering McCarthy had just shut down a move to impeach President Joe Biden.

As far as many conservatives were concerned, McCarthy couldn't be counted on to do anything right. However, it seems McCarthy was looking for something to help distract conservatives, and supporting the expungement movement was an easy choice.

McCarthy told reporters, "I think it is appropriate, just as I thought before, that you should expunge it because it never should have gone through."

Both impeachments are widely seen as politically motivated, and neither went anywhere in the Senate.

Expunging Trump's impeachment in the grand scheme of things won't change much, but it does send a message that Republicans have not forgotten what Democrats did in their desperation to stop Trump.
