In a bold move, the board of trustees unanimously voted on Thursday to rename the historic venue “The Donald J. Trump and The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts,” with workers spotted adding Trump’s name to the signage by Friday, as Fox News reports.

Historical Roots of the Cultural Hub

Fast forward to 1962, President John F. Kennedy breathed new life into the project, appointing Broadway producer Roger L. Stevens as board chair and rallying support from former First Ladies Jacqueline Kennedy and Mamie Eisenhower for a hefty $30 million campaign.

After Kennedy’s tragic assassination, President Lyndon Johnson signed a bill in 1964 to dedicate the center as a living memorial to JFK, cementing its legacy—until now.

Enter President Donald Trump, who took the reins as chairman of the Kennedy Center board earlier this year after replacing 18 trustees appointed by the prior administration.

Trump’s Impact on the Center’s Revival

Under Trump’s leadership, the center saw a fundraising boom, nearly doubling contributions during the Biden administration with a record $23 million, as reported by Fox News Digital.

Trump also secured over $131 million in private and corporate donations, plus $257 million from Congress to tackle more than $250 million in long-overdue maintenance repairs that had plagued the building.

“The Kennedy Memorial is not impacted at all,” said Roma Daravi, Kennedy Center vice president of public relations, in a statement to Fox News Digital. “Trump raised over $131 million in private and corporate donations and had Congress give $257 million for critical infrastructure needs, all to SAVE this institution.”

Renaming Sparks Fierce Backlash

Daravi added, “Those individuals attacking now, sat idly by while America’s cultural center slowly crumbled. Now the bipartisan Trump Kennedy Center is here for generations to come.” Let’s be real—fixing a crumbling institution deserves credit, not just progressive outrage over a name change.

On Thursday, the board’s unanimous vote sealed the renaming, and by Friday, crews were hoisting blue tarps to install “The Donald” above Kennedy’s name on the building’s facade.

Even the website got a quick makeover, with the header updated to “The Trump Kennedy Center” by 1 p.m. local time on Friday, signaling this change isn’t just cosmetic.

Critics Cry Foul Over Name Change

Critics, however, aren’t applauding, with JFK’s niece, Maria Shriver, taking to X to blast the decision. “It is beyond comprehension that this sitting president has sought to rename this great memorial dedicated to President Kennedy,” she wrote. Democratic Rep. Joyce Beatty of Ohio also fired off a heated video message on Thursday, alleging the vote wasn’t truly unanimous and claiming she was silenced during the discussion. While her frustration is noted, the board ensured all members could attend or listen in, suggesting transparency wasn’t entirely absent.
