Kash Patel calls out Amy Klobuchar's 'grotesque mischaracterizations' at confirmation hearing
The Senate confirmation process for many of President Donald Trump's key nominees has continued apace over the last few weeks, with some picks facing more difficult paths to approval than others.
Among the most contentious nominations put forward by Trump has been that of Kash Patel to lead the FBI, and during his confirmation hearing before the Judiciary Committee on Thursday, he was forced to call out the “false accusations and grotesque mischaracterizations” leveled against him by Democrat Sen. Amy Klobuchar, as Breitbart reports.
Hearing grows heated
It was during Thursday's proceedings that Klobuchar began her dialogue with Patel by referencing what she said were direct quotes and asking the nominee if he had, indeed, uttered the statements she read.
On more than one such occasion, Patel informed the senator that he lacked access to the statements at hand and that she had produced what he believed were incomplete, partial, or out-of-context examples.
One such incident involved Klobuchar questioning Patel about his prior characterization of the FBI as “thoroughly compromised” and a “threat to the people” unless remedial actions are taken, and she suggested that job applications to the agency have tripled in recent years, something she said would not happen if the citizenry believed it to be corrupt.
Patel, in response, declared flatly, “The American public's trust in it is 40%. That's an all-time low.”
Klobuchar went on to aggressively interrogate Patel by asking, “Did you say that the FBI headquart4ers should be shut down and reopened as a museum of the deep state?” and after providing a detailed answer on the subject, the nominee lamented, “If the best attacks on me are going to be false accusations and grotesque mischaracterizations, the only thing this body is doing is defeating the credibility the men and women at the FBI,” causing the senator to grow visibly annoyed.
Clashes continue
It was not only Klobuchar who took a combative stance against Patel, with a number of other Democrats on a series of hot-button topics, as Fox News notes.
Patel and Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) had a fiery exchange regarding the nominee's prior testimony from the classified documents probe involving Trump, suggesting that any hesitancy in providing the material to the committee gave “the appearance...that you have something to hide.”
Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) attempted to cast doubt on Patel's suitability by raising Trump's pardons and commutations on behalf of Jan. 6, 2021 protest participants, prompting the nominee to state that while he had “not looked at all 1,600 individual cases,” he also did not believe that America is safer “because of President Biden's commutation of a man who murdered two FBI agents,” a reference to Leonard Peltier, who was convicted of killing to FBI agents at point-blank range.
California Democrat Sen. Adam Schiff took his turn questioning Patel over his involvement in the promotion of a song recording made by the so-called “J6 Prison Choir,” commanding the nominee to turn around in his seat to face Capitol Police officers present at the hearing, a group he says was victimized by protestors on the fateful day in question.
Holding firm to his commitment to protecting and defending law enforcement officers, Patel declined to do as Schiff suggested and continued facing his questioner directly, adding an extra element of tension and drama to the proceedings.
Pundits express approval
Though it remains to be seen whether Patel's appearance at the hearing will be sufficient to persuade any Republicans who may still be on the fence about his nomination, it is clear that his steadfast responses to hostile questioners earned the admiration of numerous conservative pundits, particularly with regard to his exchanges with Klobuchar.
Townhall's Dustin Grange opined on X, “Amy Klobuchar continues to get outmaneuvered by Kash Patel at every turn of this committee hearing,” with commentator Benny Johnson succinctly declaring the nominee's approach to be “SAVAGE,” a description with which countless MAGA supporters will assuredly agree.
