Kamala Harris says she is ready if she has to take over for Biden

September 7, 2023

Vice President Kamala Harris said Wednesday during an interview that she is ready if she has to take over for President Joe Biden if his health doesn't hold up.

"Joe Biden is going to be fine, so that is not going to come to fruition," Harris insisted to The Associated Press in Jakarta, Indonesia, where she attended a summit. "But let us also understand that every vice president — every vice president — understands that when they take the oath, they must be very clear about the responsibility they may have to take over the job of being president."

She added, "I’m no different."

It's possible that Biden would have been yanked out of the presidency by now if Harris were more popular. Only 32% approve of her, according to NBC News, while 77% in an AP poll think Biden is too old for another term.

Harris insists that Biden isn't in serious decline mentally, however.

"I see him every day," she said of the president. "A substantial amount of time we spend together is in the Oval Office, where I see how his ability to understand issues and weave through complex issues in a way that no one else can to make smart and important decisions on behalf of the American people have played out."
