Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on social media on Wednesday that he and his wife Sophie are now separated and that she has moved out of the family home where he lives with their three children.

The couple will remain amicable and will share custody of the children, a spokesperson said.

"They remain a close family and Sophie and the Prime Minister are focused on raising their kids in a safe, loving, and collaborative environment. The family will be together on vacation, beginning next week," the statement read.

Sophie will also stay at the family home with the children while Trudeau is traveling.

As recently as April, the couple professed love for each other on social media, and in June, Sophie praised her husband's role as a father on Father's Day.

The last PM to separate from a spouse while in office was Trudeau's father, who separated from his mother in 1977 when Trudeau was young.
