Johnson Wins Speakership On House Floor

 October 25, 2023

We finally have a speaker of the House of Representatives in America.

Rep. Mike Johnson has won at long last.

The Republican from Louisiana won 220 votes and secured the gavel.

Johnson had originally lost in a contest for the role with House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, a Republican from Minnesota.

However, when it became very clear that Emmer didn't have the support required to actually secure the position, and former President Donald Trump publicly came out against Emmer, he dropped out, and Johnson ascended.

"My strong SUGGESTION is to go with the leading candidate, Mike Johnson," Trump said.

Rep. Elise Stefanik, a Republican from New York, agreed with Trump's assessment of Johnson.

Johnson is a "man of deep faith" who "epitomizes what it means to be a servant leader," according to Stefanik. "A deeply respected constitutional lawyer, Mike has dedicated his life to preserving America's great principles of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."
