Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) is rebelling against Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), who changed the Senate's dress code last week and permitted Senators to appear dressed in any way they like.
Manchin, who has made a habit of being a thorn in Democrat leadership's side, is now leading a movement calling for a reversal of the unprecedented change to the dress code.
The move from Schumer was made to accommodate Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA), who often would wear just a hoodie and athletic shorts which fell far short of the standard business attire that the Senate dress code required.
Manchin is collecting bipartisan support in the Senate, and legislators like John Cornyn (R-TX) and Dick Durbin (D-IL) have already signaled that they support a reversal of the decision.
Many Democrats expressed anger at Schumer for his sudden change to the dress code, as he seemingly made the decision unilaterally and with no input from other Democrats.
If the dress code changes are refused, it will be a humiliating defeat for Schumer and will further fracture the image of unity among Senate Democrats.
