Joe Biden pushing new rules for AI chips ahead of Trump transition
The Biden administration has proposed new regulations for the exporting of advanced computer chips used to develop artificial intelligence citing national security concerns.
The massive announcement comes just a week before President-elect Donald Trump is set to be sworn into office as the 47th president of the United States, and it is expected that Trump will be enacting starkly different policies from Biden.
The new regulations have already incited protests from chip industry executives as well as from the European Union over Biden's proposed export restrictions.
White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan explained the thinking behind the new rules saying, "If it’s China and not the United States determining the future of AI on the planet, I think that the stakes of that are just profound."
Export restrictions have been in place against China and Russia, but the new rules are designed to close loopholes by targeting countries that China and Russia could trade with to acquire AI technology.
This will be a big issue to keep an eye on, especially with Biden on the way out and Trump set to take over.
