Joe Biden names coronavirus response director Jeff Zients as replacement for outgoing Chief of Staff Ron Klain

 January 23, 2023

President Joe Biden has named his replacement for outgoing chief of staff Ron Klain, who recently announced his resignation and will be leaving the White House in the coming weeks.

Biden chose Jeff Zients, who was in charge of overseeing the White House’s response to the Chinese coronavirus, to replace Klain on Sunday.

Biden chose Zients over Anita Dunn, a female senior adviser, and Susan Rice, a woman of color. The president has been insistent that he cares about having a diverse team, but his choice of Zients indicates that he is being less than honest with his supporters.

Zients has been a significant figure in the White House as he coordinated with Dr. Anthony Fauci and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky in dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic.

Zients will inherit a difficult job as the Biden administration will be faced with dozens of challenges in the next two years.

The White House will have to do battle with the Republican-controlled House of Representatives while fending off angry Americans fed up with two years of failed leadership from Joe Biden.
