Jill Biden calls Melania Trump after assassination attempt

 July 16, 2024

First lady Jill Biden and former first lady Melania Trump don't have a lot in common except for the fact that they're both married to American presidents.

That bond was presumably what prompted Mrs. Biden to reach out to Mrs. Trump in the wake of the assassination attempt in Pennsylvania over the weekend. The two reportedly spoke via phone after the shooting.

According to Fox News, details of the conversation between the two women were not available at the time of publishing.

For her part, Melania Trump released a statement in the wake of the attempt to end her husband's life.

"When I watched that violent bullet strike my husband, Donald, I realized my life, and Barron's life, were on the brink of a devastating change," Melania Trump said in a statement.

She added, "I am grateful to the brave secret service agents and law enforcement officials who risked their own lives to protect my husband."

In addition to Jill Biden phoning Melania Trump, President Joe Biden also called Donald Trump after the shooting, even though the two have been engaged in a bitter rivalry in the 2024 presidential campaign.

Fox News noted:

President Biden then addressed the nation from the Oval Office on Sunday night, saying the attempted assassination of former President Trump is forcing Americans to "take a step back" and calling on all sides to "lower the temperature in our politics."

"My fellow Americans, I want to speak to you tonight about the need for us to lower the temperature in our politics," Biden said. "Do remember, while we may disagree, we are not enemies."

He added, "We’re neighbors, we’re friends, coworkers, citizens, and most importantly, we are fellow Americans. We must stand together."

However, that sentiment didn't last long, as Biden was back to attacking Trump, quite harshly, in a campaign speech Tuesday night at an NAACP event.

Throughout the mumbling and gaffes, Biden slammed Trump on several different issues, with many of the statements exaggerated in nature or outright false.
