JD Vance sounds alarm over fall of Syrian government, warns of 'offshoot of ISIS' taking power

 December 9, 2024

Vice President-elect J.D. Vance responded to the news that the Syrian government under President Bashar Al Assad had collapsed under a sudden onslaught from rebel forces on Sunday.

While some celebrated Assad's fall, Vance stated that he was seriously concerned about the collapse of the regime and the ensuing power vacuum that will form.

Vance took to X to respond to a Washington Post columnist celebrating Assad's fall saying, "As President Trump said, this is not our fight and we should stay out of it. Aside from that, opinions like the below make me nervous. The last time this guy was celebrating events in Syria we saw the mass slaughter of Christians and a refugee crisis that destabilized Europe."

The fall of Assad may actually have horrible consequences should fundamentalist terrorist groups come out on top in the resulting power struggle.

Libya stands as a prime example of the consequences of regime change that leads to the rise of violent terrorist groups. As many Syrian rebel groups are composed of members of Islamic fundamentalist groups, there is serious concern about the rights -- and survival -- of Syria's Christian population.

In the next year, the fall of Assad could have horrific consequences, and Vance recognizes what is at stake now that Syria has descended into chaos.
