Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir announced Tuesday that his country's government is purchasing and distributing 10,000 assault rifles to civilian security teams along the nation's border.
Bulletproof helmets and vests will also be distributed to help protect and arm the citizenry to protect themselves against Hamas fighters, who came across the border and raided homes starting on Saturday.
"We will turn the world upside down so that towns are protected," Ben Gvir said. "I have given instructions for massively arming the civilian security teams to provide solutions for towns and cities, and so as not to leave towns unprotected, preparations will be made for a Guardian of the Walls 2."
The initiative started after border town residents told Israeli government officials that they wanted to defend themselves against Hamas.
Over 1,000 Israelis have been killed in the attacks in less than a week of fighting, including many elderly, women, and children.
Over 1,400 people in Gaza have been killed, many of them Hamas fighters, since Israel began to retaliate against the militant organization.
